Stoneware, turquoise glaze
Mythical creature with a human head and the body of a lion, this headless sphinx is sculpted in ceramic and coated with turquoise glaze, reminiscent of the so-called 'Egyptian Faience,' a vitreous glaze used to coat statuettes, amulets, and ushabti with a production period ranging from the protodynastic era to the 14th century AD.
